Harry Truman caved in to Congress in 1946 and kept payroll tax withholding and war levels of taxes. This provided Congress with huge amounts of funds. They promptly devised a series of spending programs which bloated the Federal budget [instead of paying off the war induced national debt].

This started the peacetime practice of Congress buying votes with everyone else's tax dollars. We've now been doing this for 61 years. [Peacetime Federal budgets before 1914 were typically 8% to 10% of GDP instead of the 23% common now.]

Despite much improved productivity, do you think our grandchildren will be better off after an estimated additional 10% or more of income is taken off the top of their paychecks just to continue our bankrupt social programs? [Not to mention actually paying down the nation debt.]
