Humans have nervous breakdowns because their brains have not developed all the nerve connections necessary for them to realize their way through whatever their stresses and issues are. This is the simplest answer I can give.

A mental breakdown occurs because a person becomes overwhelmed by the stressors in their life and they literally do not know what to do next or where to turn. They completely shut down and often can no longer care for themselves or anyone else for a time. Some people recover from these events and, with help, learn to cope with the many problems of life. Some have recurrences and develop other forms of mental illness, but some of these also recover, it just takes longer and more help.

A nervous breakdown is a layman's term for a serious medical
condition. For example, people talk about heart attacks; but then some of them are false alarms and some of them are fatal.
You need a well trained physician who speaks your language to
sort this out. That's not always easy to find.

Men have nervous breakdowns because they have to deal with women. Women have them because they were born half insane to begin with and it just doesnt take much to push them over the edge, when they are already half way there. It is not a sign of mental illness in the males case, only the females.
