I adopted my sister's pink beta fish. She said they got it from Wal-Mart about a year ago. Anyway, apparently it started developing these little black spots on it a few months ago on it's body It only had about three before, but it's gotten two more in the last month. Anyone know what this is?

As long as there are no signs of illness and the spots are not "fuzzy," they're probably just natural coloration coming out. Grey patches on the fish's chin and on the top of his head are also common color varieties that come out after a year or so.

However, there is a possibility that it's related to illness, see the excerpt I copied from one of my favorite Betta sites below regarding Black Spot Disease:

BLACK SPOT DISEASE:
SCIENTIFIC NAME: Posthodiplostomum sp.
COMMON NAME(S): Black spot disease
SYMPTOMS: Small black spots present on body.
ORGANISM: Digenetic fluke

RECOMMENDED TREATMENT: Will usually go away on its own, as the complex life cycle of the fluke can not be completed in an aquarium. Otherwise, a five minute freshwater bath followed by formalin @ 75 ppm for one hour. Formalin is dangerous to use, so treat ONLY is a hospital tank, and wear gloves and goggles when handling.

As other answers have mentioned, definitely check your water params and it won't hurt to do a 30% water change (maybe even 50 if the params are extremely out of whack!)

Good luck!

Actually, it's probably not fin rot. Fin rot would have been more obvious on, well, the fins or the tail.

It could be a fungal disease but if your fish isn't displaying any other symptoms (in appearance or behaviour - does he look any different? Is he swimming or eating differently?) it's probably just a pigment change. This is especially likely since he had those black spots before.

Don't worry about it. Just keep an eye on him.

It's most likely just natural color changes in the fish. Other than natural pigment changes there are a few reasons for black appearing on a betta, but any of those would cause more change and more quickly than you are seeing on your fish. Disease that cause black areas or damage from poor water quality would without a doubt have killed the fish well before now, so you can rule those causes out.
