I mowed my lawn yesterday then stopped got off of the mower for a few minutes to view the lawn. Then when I got back on to finish mowing the mower would start but as soon as I shifted into gear and let off the clutch the mower would die. What would be causing the mower to do this?

Check the switch under the seat that controls your safety..if you get off with it in gear, or the mower engaged it will kill the engine. maybe its bad or got unplugged

I have an older model craftsman II 18hp 44" cut that has gotten quite sensitive in it's old age. Usually if the motor starts and runs fine until you engage something, i.e. the PTO the transmission etc, it's an electrical problem.
There are several safety switches on all lawn tractors. The seat switch on mine is particularly touchy. Check all the wiring first. The engine sounds like it's fine. must be something else.
The site below is good for finding the parts when you determine the problem. Just enter you model number and you can view a exploded diagram of the various parts of your tractor.
Not all the parts have to come from sears, generic parts may be available at your local lawn mower shop.

One of the safety interlock switches is not functioning properly. Visually check each one. Go to "Sears.com", go to Parts, enter your model # then to "View Diagram". You will be able to see what switches are and where they are located. Hope this helps you!

What happens if you don't put it in gear and just let out the clutch? Are you sure the transmissions isn't locked up?

most likely a safety interlock switch has gone bad....most can be bypassed to see if that one,s the problem...bypass one at a time till you find the faulty one....they either complete a circuit..or interrupt a circuit...in your case I would say it complete,s a circuit....open,s your ignition to ground...effectively killing your engine ignition..most are disabled...simply by unplugging them....other,s have to be crossed...determine which you have...good luck!
