Hello. My water broke this morning at 5.30am. Its now 3.45pm and Ive still not gone into labur. i HAVE been to hospital and they have checked me over - everything is fine. I am now at home and shall be induced tomorrow at 8.30am if nothing happens until then. My question is how long after your water broke did u go into labour and how long was your labour for? PLEASE don't tell me I should be in hospital, there is no need for me to be there, this is the way it works in the UK, u stay at home until labour establishes, i have been in, been checked and im fine. i only want to know the answer to the question above. I did ask this question earlier but not many people actually answered my direct question.
Thanks very much for your help

I am a labor nurse, and usually when someone is full term and her water breaks, labor begins on its own within 24 hours, usually less. But sometimes labor doesn't start and it's up to the physician or midwife to decide if they want to induce. Some won't. Some might want to start you on a prophylactic course of antibiotics to prevent infection. Even if you are ruptured for more than 24 hours, the increased risk for infection is relatively slight if you aren't being frequently checked for dilation.

you will be fine and if it does not start by it self the morning will have you induced, as each and every pregnancy is different so is the whole process from water breaking to delivery. I have had 4 kids and each one was entirely different each and every time. My water broke and I had my first one 5 and 1/2 hours later, second I did not know I was in labor, I called my doctor and asked if he could call me in some medication for a bladder infection as I had had so many with this one, the doctor noticed I has having pains about 4 minutes apart so I went in and my water broke upon the first exam to check for dilation and 1 hour and 50 minutes later she was born. My third I was induced as my blood pressure was dangerously high and they wanted me to deliver right away, They broke my water around 4:30 pm and mt son was born 11:45pm, my fourth and final was premature 5 weeks, I had just had a dr. appt that day and they said everything was going well and still 5 weeks to go however I came home ,went shopping and then my water broke, it was 8:oopm ,went right into hospital and had a healthy 7lb 2oz. baby at 5:45 next morning! So don't worry, there is so much water and it will be fine, if you do not go into labor today by yourself in the morning the docs will do it for you. Remember to drink plenty of fluids and walk a lot and do not stress, as your doctors know what they are doing! Congratulations soon you will be a mommy!

When I had my first baby my waters broke hours before I went into labour only I was told that I had to go to hospital when my waters broke and I also live in the UK. Anyway they put a drip in to make my contractions stronger and my labour lasted for 26 hours.

Congrats on your soon to be new baby. I have heard that there is a time frame where you need to be in the hospital after your water bag breaks since there is a risk of infection setting in. You should be alright for at least 24 hours and then something needs to be eventually done so you can have this baby..

My water broke with my third at 3:30pm, but I was told to come to the hospital only because I was a vbac (vaginal birth after cesarean) I never went into active labor, I had to be induced. I went into the hospital at 6pm, and at 10pm they induced, I was given the option to wait and see if labor started, but the doctor said they might as well do it then instead of waiting all night and doing it later. I had my son at 4am.

My water broke at my doctors appt, right before he came in to see me. he walked me across the street to the hospital. I started having contractions the minute I laid down in the bed, and 90 minutes after that, the baby was out. My labor was 2 hours an 15 minutes from water breaking, to baby being out.

My water didn't break until the end of labor all three times.

Be sure you DO NOT take a bath since your membranes are ruptured. Showering is OK though.

You could try nipple stimulation to get some contractions going. At least 20 mins at a time.

Also walking and squatting to bring baby down and put more pressure on your cervix.

I have heard you have 24 hrs to get the baby to the hospital because if you don't then the baby might get sick so. I would be a t the hospital maybe at like 15 hours just to be safe.

With both of my pregnancies, my water broke but labor did not start spontaneously. After about 24 hours they had to induce labor. Good luck!
