I don't think it's a good idea. Monkeys cost a lot of money, and they really aren't meant to be pets. Cats and dogs have been bread to be domesticated; monkeys, not so much. They need a lot more than one person can offer them. Sorry.

Well, there you have it. . . . no one owns monkey's except Exoctic Animal Keepers of Zoo's so there aren't any pet stores that carry Monkey Food.
They need vitamins and minerals specific for their needs but supplemental foods would include fruits and veggies.
Just because they are somewhat human in their features, they can't live on strictly a human diet.
There would be the shots for specific disease that you might or might not be able to get for them.
Then there is the dental care. There aren't many monkey dentist around not to mention that there aren't many Exoctic
Animals Vets either.
Well, you won't be spending anything like $1,000.00 for a monkey. . . . it will be more like $5,000.00 IF you can find a place that would sell you a monkey.
Most monkey's that are sold in the USA are generally sold mostly through Black Market as it is pretty much illegal to own a monkey unless you have the proper licenses.
Monkey's ARE cute esp.when they are babies but they don't stay babies forever.
Monkeys play with themselves, they will pee on you, flip poop on you esp when they are mad, they are destructive and don't care what they tear up.
Sure, you can put diapers on them but how long do you really think they keep those diapers on? Even if they kept the diapers on,haven't you ever seen a kid with his hands down in their diaper? So would you see a monkey doing the same thing and God only knows what they would do with what they retrieve from that diaper. . . . . Oh the finger painting they could do but on which one of your walls or which piece of furniture.
As adult male monkey's reach puberty they can become really strong and very AGGRESSIVE.
Now liability insurance plays a part. You could be required to keep liability insurance on your monkey for uncontrolled acts of aggression.

There are some handicapped people who own monkey's as working monkeys and though they show you on TV the benefits of having these monkeys they never show the downside of the monkey when it is throwing it's temper tantrum and throwing things and bouncing off the walls.

Just like a Cheetah or Lion is a wild animal and will always revert to the animal ways so is a monkey and they too have that wild in them and at any moment can revert to that behavior.

Having a monkey for a pet is like having a dog that can't be controlled and in the end most people who do manage to get a monkey do the same as they would with an uncontrollable dog and that is one of two things. . . . Give it away or have it put down.

Do some more research on having a monkey as a pet and I think all in all you will see that what I am telling you is correct and the idea of getting a monkey for a pet is probably something you really don't want to do.
Go volunteer some time with a Zoo or an Exotic Animal Keeper and in no time you will have had all you want from monkey's and you will definately change your mind about having one for a pet.

Monkeys are not the cleanest nor the best pets to have. You have to keep them current on their shots, especially rabies, EVERY YEAR! They can be vicious little creatures. They must be spayed or neutered, and there is still no guarantee that they will not act nasty.

We had a lady that lived in our area that had probably 15 monkeys, all different breeds. She DID NOT take care of them, she did not keep the vaccinated, and even if you do, the vaccines are NOT 100%! One of her primates, attacked and bit a 4yr old that had come to her house to visit. The incident was immediately reported, and the Dept of Health had to be notified, the monkey had to be put down, it was an awful situation, the owner of the monkey tried to dodge the State for two weeks until they finally explained to her that she would go to jail for this if she did not follow the rules of the State. She finally brought the moneky in, we euthanized it per the law, and had to send it's head in for Rabies testing (it' the ONLY way to test any animal for Rabies), the child had to endure the treatment against rabies, and the monkey's owner relinquished the rest of her "collection".

Monkeys are cute, BUT they are not meant to be pets, NO MATTER how well you think your monkey is trained, it is still an animal.

Monkeys have to have a certain diet, vaccinations, and enclosed shelter, not the ability to run around your house, take their diapers off and throw their feces, WHICH THEY DO!

Sorry if the truth is blunt, BUT monkeys are not a smart pet for anyone to own.

Monkeys seem to be very engaging animals and many people think they want one as a pet. However, they are VERY difficult to care for; most captive monkeys die in captivity. Even zoos find them hard to keep alive and healthy.

Most monkeys are on the CITES Endangered Species List. Those that are not listed as Endangered are listed as Threatened. So it is VERY difficult to get a permit to keep a monkey. It is also VERY difficult to find someone who has one to sell.

You mention $1,000, but a woolly monkey would cost you more than $30,000 and a capuchin would cost only slightly less. All monkeys, if you can find one to buy, are VERY expensive. So are their vet bills.

Monkeys are social animals. They do not do well alone. So you need at least two of them to have any chance of making them happy in captivity.

Many years ago I had a woolly monkey. He was adorable and I gave him all the right foods (I think). But he developed a respiratory infection and died. That killed me.

I don't mean to be a killjoy, but you probably should think about some other pet. Bear in mind that most exotic animals are expensive to buy and expensive to keep.

Regards,

Scott

having any pet is a big responsibility you need to check with your local law about have pets like that and if you not willing to spend thousands on a pet you need not have one because vet and food bills add up
