You need a "mash" of sugary items suspended or dissolved in water.

You need a covered container (this is an anaerobic process).

A sprinkle of yeast will help. Organism in the air will work, but it doesn't hurt to stack the deck.

A warm temperature is helpful.

You need a bottle of Fabreze, the process can become noticable in closed quarters by smell

You need to know when to quit. What is alcohol today can become aldehyde and acetic acid tomorrow.

fermentation is the conversion of the end product of glycolysis into a reduced compound that can be removed from the body. you, as a human, will ferment something if you have no oxygen left in a cell. one time this happens is when you have been exercising and youve used up all the oxygen in your muscles in the process of making energy for that exercise. your muscles will will then proceed to ferment instead of undergo aerobic respiration. this fermentation produces a waste product called lactic acid (in humans), which is the 'burn' when you have been exercising for a while. in other organisms, such as yeast, fermentation produces ethanol, which is what makes a drink alcoholic.

Yeast are affected by temperature. They are inactive in a cold condition and they indulge in an orgy of fermentation in a very high temperature. High temperatures can also lead to excessive levels of diacetyl.

This is a pretty general question, so all I can do is give a general answer: you will need the right kind of nutrients, a source of heat set to the right temperature for the individual organism, and oxygen.
