I'd think you could store it for as long as it continues to be there. eventually, it will break down to be just organic compost.. That's really when it's best to apply it.. when it's WELL broken down.
Fresh manure can cause problems.. weed seeds, too much ammonia, etc.

I don't believe there is a "set" amount of time. You don't want to use it "fresh" as the decomposing will kill plants rather than help them. I till my manure into the garden each year after the gardening season to let it decompose all winter. Horse manure is not as good as cow manure since the digestive system allows seeds to pass through that will grow in your garden. If you are storing it, why not add other organic waste and make a compost from it?

Fresh manure of any kind, horse, cow,or anything else contains in general nettle, dock, and chickweed seeds and should be kept for a year at least, turned at least once a year and sprayed to kill off any weeds that grow before being used in the garden. Horse manure also often contains wood shavings which take a long time to break down and would look unsightly in your garden, they wouldn't do any harm but wouldn't look very nice. Fresh manure is also very acidic and would burn your plants.

I'm still using a 25 YO pile
Ideal is about a year, where you can't tell the manure from the sawdust and hay

It should be well rotted or it could burn the soil. The longer you can store it the better, fresh manure would do more harm than good.

Do not apply it `fresh from the horse`. When it resembles `pipe tobacco` it is ready.

As long as you want. Composting is better than using it fresh (breakdown of the cellulose in it ties up nitrogen).
