Question about molly and guppy tank lighting?

My black molly seems to shy away from the lighting and stay near the bottom when turn it on. When I turn it off he comes up to the top. I have two guppys who dont care that much about the light, but when it's on they seem to be more happy and they swim around more. I dont want to seperate my fish and I have only one tank setup. Any advice on how to meet everyones needs? Like..how many hours of light or so? Thanks.

Generally keeping a schedule of 10-12 hours of lighting a day is good for most any fish, but as another answer points out, the lighting is not really needed in a fish only tank and it's just there so we an see our fish and enjoy them. That is assuming the tank gets some light from the room in general of course.

One way to provide for the needs of both fish types would be the addition of some floating plants, or long plants that trail over on the surface of the water. These could be live or fake, it's just to provide a shaded protected area for the fish that prefer less light.

Actually,mollies and guppies doesn't even need lights to survive,except you have some live plants in your tank,if don;t have any then you can just turn on the light only every time you want to view the tank,and by the way almost all mollies today are tank bred,because they breed so easily,and breeding tanks usually don't have any lighting at all,so they also are not used to lighting,but can get used to it.if you want u can use red light because fishes cannot sense light near the red spectrum so even if you turn on red light ,they can't sense it,therefore you can view the fishes while they can swim around the tank undisturbed.
