Well it is a bit of lottery, especially considering that most recording companies are wasting their money on suing 14 yo downloaders rather than actually finding new artists.

Firstly you have to know what the real deal with recording a CD is.

Firstly, the recording company will take most of the money and turn your art into something that someone who probably doesn't even like music thinks is good or easy to sell.

1. Cut a demo. Record all your gigs and if you are in the biz you probably know someone who knows someone who has a computer and home studio setup. So it is not expensive.

2. Play more gigs.

3. Get your stuff out there. Put it online and let people download it for free. Better than letting them buy it and letting the recording company talk all the green.

4. Promote yourself. Make a video. Not expensive and if you contact a local film school or college you can get a video clip made for free by the next Spike Lee. Post it on youtube and see what happens (a small Australian band got huge exposure internationally this way...their clip cost them $200).

5. Shake your money maker...as the saying goes. Do anything. Do charity gigs, make t-shirts, give away free hugs (another Australian band promoting themselves using youtube).

6. Most smaller artists make money by playing gigs. Only a small number become rich through signing a record deal. The truth is, recording companies employ people to find new talent, these people miss most of the good stuff.

7. Record your own CD. Even with modest sales you can make a lot of money. If your stuff is not very commercial radio orientated then this is best way.

8. Have patience. People make it big overnight, but often spend 5-10 years building up to it and working in bad jobs while they build a reputation and skills.

9. If you really want a record deal, with a demo and a vibe you are likely to get one. If you have nothing, then no one will notice you. There are some greats bands that have been discovered playing dead-end gigs.

Good luck

If you're only a 6, the last thing you need to worry about is hiring management. Get better at your craft, then move onto management and finding label support.

Though honestly, with the internet, you really don't need label support - you can do it all yourself these days, just try.
