Painted Turtles can make great pets! It takes some work and money, however, to create a good habitat for it. In this case, for example, you would need:
- About 120 gallon tank, tub, or pond
- Filter rated for about 300 gallon system
- Heater to keep the water 75-80F
- Good basking logs, ramp, dock, etc.- a BIG one.
- Basking light to heat the basking site to about 90F
- UVB light to help process vitamin D3
- Good turtle pellets for food
- Live or frozen/thawed fish foods like worms, krill, shrimp, etc. for food as well
- Live aquarium plants or some dark leafy greens for food
There is a good care sheet for these guys at http://www.austinsturtlepage.com
Now- in general, wild-caught turtles make poor pets- they are confused, stressed, and just plain do not take well to captivity. I would really suggest that you just release it where you found it. (It was not lost or anything, just looking for a new territory!)

RE:
Found wild turtle?
We found a wild turtle in our drive. We think it's a painted turtle. It's about 8 to 10 inches in length. Any suggestions on what to do with it?

If you found it in your drive, it is a wild animal, perfectly capable of finding its own food and caring for itself, if you just leave it alone. Watch it for your enjoyment, and to learn about it, but do not attempt to keep it and make a pet out of it. It may have been on your drive because the asphalt or cement holds the heat, and it was just sunning itself and staying warm. Put it in the grass, near a water source if there is one near you, and it will be on his way.

most probably it's a pet of a neighbour so ask around and try taking it back to its owners. if not then just find her a big box, lay some paper on the floor of it that would be her home, so whenever you're not looking after her just put her there and put some lettuce or cucumbers with her and leave her to feed. change the paper on the floor of the box every day or every other day according to her habbits. that's about it. as much as turtles are easy to take care of they're wildly boring pets.

Hello YOU DON'T ..YOU LET THE TURTLE GO..takes more then food to keep them alive & happy ..unless you don't care that it can get sick & die...not to mention the serious diseases they carry which they are immune to but YOU ARE NOT ..like e coil, salmonella...wild reptiles DO NOT NEED your care, they don't need nor have..parents either, "Survival of the fittest - that's Nature" !! Oh & taking reptiles from the wild is illegal ;) If they aren't naive to your area, chances are someone will be looking for their Lost Pet..otherwise it needs insects, UV light, warmth & a secure enclosure...etc !! Take Care :)

If you keep it, the odds are that it won't live to maturity. If you release it, the odds are that it won't live to maturity. Keeping it involves responsibility. You have to identify it. You have to provide a suitable habitat for it. You have to feed it, clean the tank, and provide for all its needs. Are you ready to do that? If not, release it. If so, prepare to spend close to $100 to get started.

Well, if it was in your drive, don't let it go there. There might be an animal rescue place near where you live. Call them, they would know what to do.
