It's been years since I DID wood-burning, but I as I remember the skill you really need is the ability to TRACE !! Just like working with crayons and a coloring-book you just need a steady hand and fair hand-eye coordination !!
Pick a simple drawing from another source and transfer it to your piece of wood with pins, a hard pencil, or pattern-marker and then start "burning" !!
As will all such hobbies, it's a matter of practice and gaining experience !! When I first started modeling, my models were often marred by glue-fingerprints, bad paint-jobs, and misaligned decals... 30 years later my models go in museums or I sell them to buyers.
GOOD luck and be CAREFUL with a wood-burner !!

try using a stamp to make ur design and use dots to create the burnt pattern. there is a woodburner called the versatool that has a lot of different tips, u will find some in there that u really like, and that will give u practice controlling the woodburner. the one i like best is a tear shape, i kinda brand wood more than anything, i use it like a hot stamp.different woods r easier than others too, and the grain affects how i burn the wood or line the design on it. the little rings sometimes r hard to burn over if i am dragging the burner.

you can trace designs onto the wood with graphite paper, you dont have to be able to draw at all, but you need to practice a lot, wood with a lot of grain will pull on the wood burning tool, wood that has hard and soft grain will allow it to flow along the soft then hitting a hard grain is like a wall, it takes practice and skill. if you do draw its better but im sure people who dont draw can still learn to do it.
