Is it better to just keep winding until the crown stops or wind back and fore?

just keep winding until the crown the crown stops.This was told to me by a watchmaker.many years ago and I have never over wound any watch since.

Do not wind back and forward. It may be a watch that by wearing it, it winds up itself. Wear it for a weekend first and see.
