Older citizens are constantly being criticized for every conceivable deficiency of the modern world, real or imaginary. We know we take responsibility for all we have done and do not blame others. BUT, upon reflection, we would like to point out that it was NOT the older citizens who took:

The melody out of music,
The pride out of appearance,
The romance out of love,
The commitment out of marriage,
The responsibility out of parenthood,
The togetherness out of the family,
The learning out of education,
The service out of patriotism,
The religion out of school,
The Golden Rule from rulers,
The nativity scene out of cities,
The civility out of behavior,
The refinement out of language,
The dedication out of employment,
The prudence out of spending, or
The ambition out of achievement.

Steve,

I think I'm going to need pages to answer this question. As I look at this list.... one things speaks to me. Older citizens definitely aren't to blame....... but neither are younger adults..... teens...... or kids. Everything on this list points to unfortunate changes in the management of our country to the point there there is a certain feeling of "entitlement" in the air of American Society.

I have to start with "the learning out of education." As a teacher myself, I'm so fortunate to be teaching at an independent school that does not have to follow certain curriculum standards that public schools do. The interesting observations are that without the "standards" set in place by a school board...... our kids test higher and achieve higher than those schools with the standards. Why? It's all in philosophy and methodology. We still have music..... we still have art..... we still promote public speaking and tolerance of all religions and beliefs. We expose our kids to EVERYTHING without limiting them. We expose..... they then get to form their own opinions and curiosities and branch out and learn. We educate out families the same way....... encouraging togetherness in family to discuss and be a part of their child's learning. We have symposiums where we educate parents on their responsibilities. We read books in class that help our kids understand adult committments of love and marriage. We read books about physical differences and we discuss prejudices and reasons for our historical past that led us to our present day issues as well.

But we walk outside of our school and our kids turn their faces to us with question wondering why people they see all around them think differently. Aren't always tolerant..... don't promote choices..... don't have work ethics and therefore lack ambition. Your first instinct is to grab them in your arms and protect them....... but we can't. We are educators. We push them out into the world a bit more and say........ "decide why you feel they are wrong and then do something about it." We teach out kids to problem solve...... to determine right from wrong and use logic and reasoning rather than judgement and hatred.

But when we are faced with government edicts that define business and commerce, it is hard for anyone else to make a difference. It takes the drive and motivation out of young people that want to give their services. But decisions from above can totally destroy a motivated spirit.

We have had a troubled history is some areas....... but we had a peaceful one in others. Technology has advanced us but at the same time it has "enabled" us in a way that makes many people sit back looking for yet another easy way out. We've become a push button society where things are fixed for us in the click of a button. We now hide behind email rather than meeting someone face to face to iron out a problem. We are in a hurry to eat...... we are in a hurry to meet.... we are in a hurry to win..... we are in a hurry to beat. We sped up life so much so quickly that we are now falling apart as we realize that melody, pride, romance, commitment, responsibility, togetherness, learning, service, civility, refinement, dedication, prudence and ambition are not things that can be obtained with a click of a button. Our elders see this. Our youngest have no clue.......they've never lived the other way. It's those of us stuck in the middle that have the struggle to meet half way.

Can it be done? Do we have the means? Do we have the right leaders? Or are we our own Armeggedon? *sigh*

Yes.
I believe school should be separate from religion, but that is the only disagreement I have.
