John Glenn
He was one of the original Mercury 7 astronauts, and the first American to orbit the Earth. He later became a US Senator (D-Ohio). In 1998, he went into space for a second time on STS-95.

IMHO, the greatest astronaut of all time is Story Musgrave. He is a mathematician, a doctor (surgeon), a software engineer, a highly qualified pilot, a musician, and an author.

His six shuttle missions were all successful. He designed the entire Hubble repair mission. I could go on and on. The guy is a national treasure.
