lets stick with the self help books that sell the most, and are most aggressively marketed the tony robbins type, not the speed reading ones, or the "big secret"(an excelent book on personal finance, check the oprah book club)
self help books work, its a proven fact(and i don't just mean the author and or publishers bank balance.
u have to be the type of person who needs the book, for it to work for u. the basic premiss of these books is motivational.
they give u the tools to succeed. that does not mean u definitely will, however if u truly believe the book then it becomes more likely you will eventually succeed.
now for the hard truth, for the majority of people self help books will not work, this is not becuase the books do not contain useful and helpful things, on the contrary the truth is that most people doubt themselves and thats part and parcel of these books, dont doubt urself and ull succeed(eventually)

now if u asked "do we need the books", id have to say yes, and no. people doubt themselves becuase other people doubted them, if this was a perfect world we wouldnt need self help books now would we.

Several years ago I took a college literature class about Non-fiction books on the best seller lists.

Self-help books were a big percentage of the books we studied and discussed.

Our professor set perimeters for our discussions. There was one topic we could not bring up in regards to these books. "We could not discuss whether these books were true or not true!"

We could discuss how the author established or tried to establish his/her credibility. We could discuss the literary techniques of the writer.

When it came to the purpose of each book. Most of the graduate students agreed with your assessment: "the purpose of the book was to make money for the writer. "

I see quite a few people reading Men are from Mars and Woman are from Venus. I have read it and suppose yes it gave me some understanding of myself.
Unfortunately I do believe most books are written for profit.

Don't get me started on self help books. I think they should be consored and have some kind of guidance labelling on them like movies. I think they can ruin people's lives. Many people that turn to them are already vulnerable and these books can cause harm. They did for someone close to me. I ended up throwing a wheelie bin full of these monsters away. They can be dangerous. People should be very careful with them. I hate them.

as in anything else, you get out of it what you put into it. self help can only help you if you want to be helped and if you identify clearly the area you need help in. i personally find experiences of others help loads but the bottom line is any effort to accomplish anything, self improvement or otherwise, starts with you.

seeing as I'm not being payed for this do I really want to help?

I suggest you look at the qualifications of the author and their former work. if they have ologies and copious counselling exp. and read a few random pages.

then make up your mind
