definitely dead, the rotting flesh and the scent from their glands together are much worse than just their regular stench that they exude sometimes.

When they get hit by cars the stink is amazing. Hit one once and had to leave the car away from the house for a few days. Awful odor.

I tend to avoid the live one that comes around and he doesn't stink. The dead ones always linger for miles and miles once they're hit. DEAD

I'd say when they're dead. When they die (especially if they're hit by a car), the entire "load" of secretion from the scent glands is released. It is eye-wateringly pungent!
