I have just bought a VW Passat Estate 2001. And the boot release doesnt work. Can anyone suggest why and how I should attempt to repair it.

You will need to remove the panel off the rear hatch , inside there. is the locking mechanism ,on the side of it is a little lever that is responsible for the operation of the boot release check it is in the correct position , you can do this by getting some-one to operate the boot release while you are looking at the lock mechanism you will be able to see where the lever makes contact with the lock & also at the same time see if the cable ( if fitted ) has snapped . On some models of passat the boot release is operated electronically if this is the case i would suggest a car electrition .
