I recommend getting some group lessons near the place where you live. It gives you a good opportunity to meet people, and it teaches you the basics. You will find that dancing is a "lead and follow" way of communication, and it emphasizes matters such as frame and posture. You will learn to "count" so that you can coordinate your steps with the music. Your instructor may even choreograph some routines for you to learn so that you have some variety. That being said, you will also need to improvise and not be wedded to a sequence of steps.

Once you have had some dance lessons, get out there on the dance floor. I like to be able to dance with as many women as possible. Sure, I am married, but the ability to dance with many different women is important. Get out and "mix it up."

If your wife or girl friend wants you to take dance lessons, go for it. If you want to take lessons on your own and dance with other women other than your wife or girl friend, sure. It will increase your skill on the dance floor.

The final step in learning to dance is JUST DO IT !
