Franco isn't the very oldest, but he is the oldest to hit a home run.

Officially 50+ when playing (no matter how briefly, and only oldest season listed):
Minoso, 54, 1980
Paige, 58, 1965
O'Leary, 51, 1934
Altrock, 56, 1933
O'Rourke, 53, 1904

Oldest players in the leagues, by season: http://www.baseball-reference.com/leaders/Oldest_leagues.shtml (Note that these are "baseball ages", the player's age on 01-July of that year. Like with horses.)

It hurts to watch Franco play sometimes, but he is a serviceable pinch hitters/once a week player. He can get away with it on the Mets because their lineup is loaded. He will play until the end of next year because he is 50, and he also helps the team with the younger players. Carlos Beltran broke out of his more than a year funk last year after being lectured by Franco about having a better attitude about the New York fans. Will be a great manager- and the Mets may need one if Randolph goes to the Bronx- when he retires.

Hoyte Wilhelm was an older person played in the middle 1960s.
Stachel Paige also played into his late years.
But at 49 could be oldest. Do not know exactly.
Julio is in great shape. He playes well in his role. Why make him retire if he is contirubitng to the team

Minnie Minoso made two plate appearances for the White Sox in 1980 when he was 55 years old. That was more of a publicity strunt. Franco is not a publicity stunt but a freak of nature, in a good way.

Depending on what you want to believe, Satchel Paige pitched for the A's in 1965 when he was supposedly 59. Minnie Minoso got a hit at age 53 in 1976 to make him the oldest player to get a hit in the MLB.

Being a Braves fan, I followed Franco for 4 years. From what I heard, he wants to play til he is 50. However, he is still in great shape. So, he could play a few more seasons.
