I am wanting some information about working a s a librarian. Will librarians be replaced by assistants who don't have to be paid as much? I saw some infromation that said that the number of librarians was growing more slowly than the assistants. Is this true?

How many jobs are there for librarians? What does it pay? What is the work like? If you could tell me any more that would be fantastic.

I don't fully agree with the other poster. True, the tradional role of the librarian is changing, due to advances in technology and changes in information storage, but librarians are adapting to the changes, and I think librarians will be around in one form or another for quite awhile, even if they're not sitting behind a reference desk answering questions.

I don't know much about how it is like to be a librarian, but it probably could be possible to earn 6 figures if you were in charge of a huge library or something. There are also specialized libraries where the librarians know about the topic (think colleges, where students need help finding stuff about topics, or librarians who help historians). I would think most public library librarians don't earn much though.

Yes this would be quite an interesting career. Maybe if you work as a school librarian you might have a better chance of getting an "old style" job where it isnt taken over by hulking machinery.

You may not like this but I feel the librarian is a slowly but steadily declining career option. With the advent of computerisation, databases, multiple indices, the need for classification of books is almost gone. And with digitalisation of books, the need for preservation of books is also going! So, I suggest that you look at other career options.

If you were already in a good position in a big library, you might not lose your job but if you are starting now, the prospects are not very bright. Normal graduates with some computer knowledge will be preferred at lesser salaries.
