Take your preaching to some body who cares, coz I dont give a toss about you or anybody else.

this country is getting more & more pathetic.
its also been said in 2008 if your caught smoking in your car you will be done for taking your hands of the steering wheel, but you take your hands of anyway to change gears,as for smoking in the likes of pubs,it wont work, most people enjoy cigs when theyve had a drink, there's no-way they could possibly police every pub in the country, plus they would loose a lot of punters & money,i agree with you if i want to smoke i will, what they should do is have pubs where you can smoke,so the people who dont smoke have the choice whether or not they want to go in,but make sure its clearly signed,SMOKERS PUB,
the police should be concentrating on findind the proper criminals,it sucks!!!

It is already working everywhere in the UK other than England, where it comes in on July 1st.

Anyone allowing people to smoke on their public premises (IE landlords etc) are breaking the law along with the person that is doing the smoking. It is a risk most pub owners won't take - there is to much at stake.

I am from Scotland, it has been here since March 06 and I have never seen one person break it.

I'm a smoker and I think the ban is great. I smoke less when I go out, I can go out with my family during the day for meal without worrying about my baby breathing in smoke. Standing outside to smoke is quite sociable!

I do although feel sorry for the lonely old men that seem to live in pubs, one of their only pleasures (smoking with a pint) has been taken away and many are just sitting at home now, drinking and smoking alone getting older and lonlier. So perhaps grotty pubs that don't attract families or serve food should have had the choice but other than that, the ban is good.

Firstly all but one country in the United Kingdom already HAS a ban. Only England is left to smoke away until July 2007.
You may be full of bravado at present, but you will soon change your tune when it becomes law. scotland has been under a smoking ban for over a year and although they are much heavier smokers here than in England, there were no riots, no demonstrations - people observed the law and it is working well. Perhaps the hefty fines on the smoker and even heftier fines on the owner of the premises you are caught smoking in seem to be doing the trick!

There has been a smoking ban in parts of the UK for over a year now and it works perfectly (England are the last of the UK to bring in this law). From personal experience the public are also policing it as the majority of them actually think it is a good thing

Just want to educate you on a little point. Smoking ban has been in place in Scotland for over 1 year. It has worked. Has been in place in Ireland for years. The ban you are talking about starting is in England which is just one country that makes up the UK. It works because resturaunts and pubs can't afford to risk the heavy fines that they will get charged if they get caught. So the owners police it themselves. Fine if you want damage our own health that is your choice, but making other people breathe your own toxic fumes is selfish.

In most of the United States, non-smoking ordinances are enforced at the state and local level, although most Americans--no matter where they live--have to obey them just as non-smoking laws are now enforced everywhere in the United Kingdom but England. Of course, that means that lots of smokers end up standing outside their place of work to light up in the snow and rain. Smoking must be a really powerful addiction! Anyway, those of us with allergies are thankful for anti-smoking laws.

This smoking ban has been a long time coming...too long. Should have been in place years ago.

I think if people must smoke then set out certain places they can smoke...like at sea!

I resent breathing in other peoples smoke.

As a nurse i have nursed many with various cancers related mainly to smoking. I have also nursed a 42 year old lady that developed Cancer of the lung through passive smoking (she worked in a bar). the consultant said her cancer was most certainly due to smoking. makes you think doesn't it.

And if i catch someone smoking on the work premises in which i work i will not hesitate in sending them off duty.

Mick you are a selfish git!

You can try & light up when you want, but that will onlt mean you are fined for breaking the law.
We have had the ban in Ireland 4 a few years now, & i must say (as a smoker) its brilliant! Pubs are clean & fresh. No choking at 11pm. Resturants are great.
I was quite sinical at the start, but the point is if you "have" to smoke. Go outside. Trust me in the winter you'll save a load of cash! & a load of health to boot!

I remember when the smoking ban started on the tube, a few cretins thought they'd ignore it. Lasted a few days. Then they started to appreciate being able to breathe. Smokers are usually really happy to have a smoke free atmosphere, oddly enough.

I think it will work eventually. If you look how far we've come you can see for yourself that it works. Years ago people would smoke on public transport, in hospitals, restaurants weren't put in sections.
As a smoker myself i find it easier to just have a cigarette at home in my back yard. I don't want to pollute other peoples breathing space, especially children which i detest when it happens to me and my baby.
I can see that in my daughters lifetime smoking will be an underground thing and you won't be able to buy cigarettes from shops only on the black market.
So yes it will work!

The smoking ban came out here in the republic of Ireland on the 29th of March 2004 and it has been a great success. I am asthmatic so I am glad of the fresh air.
