The drive to succeed in the way that these people chose to succeed is often based on simple insecurity.
This insecurity drives them to succeed to prove to the world that they are worth something.
This is hardly success. True success is living a life and being perfectly content with yourself just the way that you are.

Success means something different to everyone. To some it's having a big house and two fancy cars in the driveway, on the other hand to someone else having a good job and being happy in a good relationship means success. If you want to be successful in whatever you deem to mean success to you, just work hard at it, and if you believe in it, you will definitely get there.

the ultimate success is realizing that there is no such thing...
Ask Maslow, he'll tell you, the ultimate success is the recognition of the structures that exist in this world, the structures, the constructs we create to help us funtion in reality, all of our daily toiling that we claim is in the name of success, and even the goals we think we've accomplished (degrees, promotions, etc), it is ALL just learning to be happy in our environment...
once you recognize that true success does not depend on how much importance society puts on you or your image, but rather on how you interpret your surroundings and on how you understand yourself as an individual...
then, and only then, can you be on the road to self-actualization

They seek attention. They need to be centre stage. They are often emotionally unstable and need public adoration to feel special or unique. They need to please others. They are often greedy. They are often wasteful. They are often selfish.
Financial success is not the ultimate success.
