Do you mean Syrian hamsters? You must NOT keep these together, they are solitary in the wild and will fight if kept in the same cage, possibly to the death. Chinese, Russian and Roborovski hamsters are the social ones that can be housed together.

I've heard the dwarf hamsters can be vicious little things, but plenty of others would disagree with me. They cost around ten dollars, but it's the cages that are the real expensive - you must buy them a decent sized one so they have enough space to live - at least two levels, and must have a wheel.
The pink 'All living things' cage on here (comes in purple too) for $21.99 is a good cage:

Just as a comparison, the green based 'All living things' one on here for $22.99 is lousy - no levels. It's designed for owner convenience not pet happiness. You could buy levels to put in it at extra expense I suppose, but by itself it's lousy.

I have a dwarf hammy.
Typically they run between 9-12 dollars, depending on where you buy yours. Make sure you inspect your hamster for signs of illness (missing patches of fur, wet tail, excessively watery nose) before you take it home.
