Unfortunately its a status symbol that people like to show off especially with the higher gas prices even though it hurts them too.

I traded in my Saturn SUV last May for an Ion, which gets better gasoline mileage, but I also knew I was going to be driving in town instead of on the Interstate, and besides my 81-year-old mother, whom I moved in with last April, hated getting out of my SUV.
Lots of Americans drive SUVs because they believe they are safer in an accident than sedans or compacts. Some models of SUVs also carry more passengers than sedans, so this feature probably appeals to families with children. As gas prices rise, Americans will most probably eventually trade in larger vehicles for smaller ones (as they did during Jimmy Carter's presidency); but so far at least, the gas stations are charging what the market will bear.

A lot of people bought SUV's when gas prices were much lower and SUV prices pretty damned high. They owe too much on them to trade them off and trade in value, because of gas prices, is declining on gas guzzlers. There are no simple answers to some problems. Big cars were a mainstay in this country until the first gas crisis and smaller cars became more and more popular. Gas stabilized and mid sized cars came into play then the big ones started to make a comeback. It's cyclical and will all change again in time. What do you drive and why? Did you purchase your vehicle based on Gas prices or the vehicle price?

PLEASE people I want proof of the gas guzzlers SUV"s where is it? Sticker says 26,32, miles per gallon how much does your economy car get? 26,32 miles to gallon, yes some have awful mileage, suburbans do BUT THEY always did!! And how do you know people driving them aren't"t conserving?Because not by your standards? Its still a free country so far and they have a right to their choice as you did.The other thing is no matter what the sticker says not every car gets that mileage alot depends on the driver, conditions and roads. How many people rushed out to buy Prius advertised at 60 mpg then it went to 40?They are just as stuck with that vechile until its paid down enough to trade yes?We are too quick to judge I think!!

We need our comfortable, big *** cars cause we have to drive long distances to get anywhere. Ever look at a world map? You Euros are lucky, you can drive for an hour on a quarters worth of gas and be in another country. Here you can drive for six hours and still be in Texas( or just about any other state except R.I.)
So, worry about your own problems, you have plenty, and leave our SUVs alone.

the upward thrust in gas expenditures is in basic terms yet another piece of information helping the recession we are in. decrease back contained in the great melancholy there become an same ting happening. human beings were attempting to get some thing for no longer some thing in basic terms to make it. Now the gas organizations try to get some thing for no longer some thing hoping that they get adequate money to very last at the same time as human beings can no longer arise with the money for to rigidity anymore. they say this is because of such intense call for yet fairly its unlike call for went up with the help of two hundred p.c. like the gas expenditures did. And with the help of ways, Bush had no longer some thing to do with the gas expenditures. The gas organizations are in basic terms attempting to make more advantageous money. And authorities is yet another element attempting to get their piece of the pie. some states contained in the previous 2 months were pondering raising the gas tax "to target to decrease the gas fee with the help of punishing the gas organizations". it extremely is retarded because all this is going to do is boost expenditures. And it has no longer some thing to do with pollution because the oil organizations do no longer care about pollution and they don't elect you to stop using by way of the indisputable fact that takes money out of their pocket.

most people that have SUV's have them because they need the space to cart around kids and such. I had one when I needed one. Now I don't. You can't carry a family around in a tiny car. Also, they are not safe. A big car is safer. I know , I know...it is important to stop using so much gas. But they need to design larger, efficiency cars. Don't be so hard on people that need the cargo space.

I drive a small car. I know a great many Americans who drive small cars. And do you know what? Even the ones who drive SUVs and complain about the gas prices can still afford to drive them. So go home, beat your drum and shake your rattles. Maybe the rice fairy will feed you today for a change.
