It depends on what the heartbreaking situation is. Try to avoid the cliches (although they're often truisms):

You'll get over it/learn to live with it
Time is a great healer
At least they're not suffering any more
They had a good innings
But what a way to go ...
There are plenty more fish in the sea
He/she wasn't good enough for you anyway
etc., etc.

There's usually nothing you CAN say - heartbreak can't be instantly healed as there are so many different emotions involved - better just to let your FRIEND do the talking and YOU do the listening - a sympathetic ear is more valuable than a few trite words.

3. I'm pregnant. With his kid...
4. So I see he listened to me.
5. You should see his hot new girlfriend!
6. You should see his hot new boyfriend
7. Woohoo! I won the bet on how long it would last!
8. You'll never find such a guy again
9. OK, enough about you, let's talk about me now.
10. I guess now would be a bad time to tell you he's married...

p.s. seriously now, just say as little as possible and listen and just be there, distract her with activities but don't mollicoddle.

Cheer up ! You could be run over by a bus tomorrow
Worse things happen at sea!
Now you can go out with me again!
I saw him yesterday with a gorgeous woman!

Sorry to all the heart broken people out there!

I think the most common and most hurtful thing a friend can say is "he wasn't worth anything anyway." Not only does that trivialize your friend's feelings it also sounds as if you always knew the relationship would fail and weren't supportive of your friend's decision to see him to begin with.

told you so. any reference to what a great guy if you have one is, i dont care, think about what you would hate to hear in that situation and then you have some idea. besides if you regularly put your foot in it then they should know this already!

If it's over a man it would have to be "There's plenty more fish in the sea." I hate that saying.
