They are all part of the Rhododendron genus. They are indigenous to the world. Many native rhododendron can be found in China, Japan, and the Eastern United States.
Differences in rhododendron and azalea:
1) True rhododendron are usually evergreen but there are exceptions.
2) True rhododendron have 10 or more flower stamens.
3) True rhododendron have leaves that are often scaly or with small dots on their undersurface.
4) Azalea are mostly decidous.
5) Azalea flowers have mostly 5 stamens.
6) Azalea leaves are never dotted with scales and are frquently hairy (pubescent).
7) Azalea flowers are largely funnel-shaped while rhododendron flowers tend to be bell-shaped.
8) Recent hybrids between true rhododendron and true azalea have intermediate stamen numbers.

Rhadendron lives in cool mountians coves without flowers and the Azalea has been continuouly modified to meet specific human visual needs til they find a replacment like the Rhodendron or Mtn Laurel.....

Rhododendron seems to be more hearty in Wisconsin. I've tried Azalea's twice and they never made it through the winter.

a rhodendron is large leafed and does not have a scent and an azalea has small leaves and is highly scented.

they are all rhodendrons botanically, rhododendron[named after Cecil Rhodes] is usually the evergreen one and azaleas r deciduous[drop leaves in late Autumn] with a good fall leaf colour and usually more perfume than rhododendron they like erecacious [acid soil]

azalia flowers in the spring a rhodedendrum flowers well into the summer and is a much larger bush and grows much larger with more blooms in my opinion a much nicer plant as it lasts a lot longer and will get larger each year
