I don't mean legally, I mean skill-wise. Say you were just driving in a straight line at moderate speed, from a standing start, is driving a big artic' basically the same as driving a car?

Thanks!

Simple answer, no.

The acceleration and braking is completely different.
So is having up to 16 forward gears with a range-change and splitter. That type of gearbox is something you need to be taught how to use, or you'll barely even get rolling...

Yes that is true, you have to sit another theory and hazard perception and it is stricter as you are applying for a different class of vehicle, have you got the class C added as a provisional and you need to have a form filled in by your doctor to say you are who you say you are that'll cost you, so if you are adding HGV then add PSV too as it is worth it so if you change your mind about HGV you have another option

if you passed your test before 1997 then you can drive a 7.5 tonne lorry. you will need to apply for a provisional licence and have a medical done to drive a big hgv with someone who holds a full cat 1 licence

Well in the sense that it has a gearbox, brakes, etc,it is.
A lot of wagons have a crash box, which,if your not used to them, you'll not be able to change gear.
Just driving in a straight line, with no obsatcles, other traffic and keeping in same gear, then there should be no problem

Judging by the lane weaving idiots who drive lorries professionally and presumably have a license to do so that I have to dodge around every day on the motorway, I'm inclined to suggest it must be very difficult to drive a lorry in a straight line......since none of them appear able to do it.

i find driving my wagon easier than driving my car because i am higher up in the cab and can see a lot further ahead but to answer your question it is basically the same just a few more gears reversing now that's a whole other problem

No they are way different, that is why it is very expensive to take an HGV test, they need a lot more careful handling,

Driving anything in a straight line doesn't take that much skill, unless you're Richard Hammond.
