The University of Pennsylvania (Penn) is a private school, a member of the elite Ivy League group of schools. It is not a state university. In Pennsylvania the state university - Penn State - is very good, and is located in the town of "State College"

Because Penn is an expensive private school, it tends to attract rich kids from affluent, highly educated families and most of the students are wealthy. You probably checked to see that the cost of attending there is about $50,000 per year and at least half the kids families pay that amount without any scholarships or loans. So, they are far from poor.l

On the other hand, half the kids are from families who need financial assistance. Most of those are middle class kids, but some are from poor families.

The Ivy League and other elite schools like Duke, Stanford, UChicago, etc tend to accept very highly qualified students, and kids from rich families tend to do well because of all their advantages. Not that they arent smart, they are! But they are smart PLUS they have great schooling and tutoring. Kids from poor families may be smart, but they just dont get the support to make them top students most of the time. So when it comes to applying to school they are at a disadvantage. There was just a long article about this in the NY Times today (5/27/07)

It is a real dilemma trying to figure out how to get money so that smart but poor students can go to the best schools.
