First of all, don't approach the sport as a career because more than likely it may not end up being a career. It is a sport and like many have said, you've got to be good at it (no, you've got to GREAT at it). The fact that you think of it as a career doesn't speak well for your love for the game. Many a cricketer has played the game only because of the love he feels for the game. Secondly, unless you're GREAT in the game, chances of you getting an advertiser to back you are remote.
Show the world that you're worth the time and fame and fortune will follow you (even if you don't want it). On the other hand, if you're just another run-of-the-mill cricketer, you'll be running behind fame and fortune till you retire (unfortunately true of most cricketers who couldn't make it to the national level, for whatever reason).

If you have exceptional talent and are in the "right" country, then it is definitely a good option. However in some countries it doesn't pay at all i.e. the Irish national team.
In others like India, a guy like Tendulkar made in excess of 15 million US$ per year. Sponsorship is the major money.
Your personal talent is the deciding factor and as in any other sports, you should keep your options open. When you reach your late 30's, things may change.

First it must be your love ! nothing else to play the game and to persue your talents at the highest level. Too easy to be overlooked so don't give up your day job !
