I suggest Acropolis with its famous monuments on top (The Parthenon, Erechthion, Apteros Niki temple etc), the ancient Agora with the annexed Kerameikos, the National Museum with exhibits covering a period of 2.500 years, and Benaki Museum with Ancient Greek, Koptic, Muslim, Bysantine, and modern greek exhibits...
As you asked for only four, I limit myself to these... Have a pleasant holiday...

The Acropolis, the area of Plaka including the Ancient Agora and the Roman Agora and the Library of Hadrian which are there, mount Lycabettus with the spectacular view of Athens in the evening, and finally I'd say the National Archaeological museum, the Benaki museum, the Byzantine art museum and the Cycladic art museum. The last three are all nearby, so I count them as one. It is really hard to limit down the choices!

1. Yeah, ok, Akropolis of course. You can combine it with this walk http://www.athensinfoguide.com/walk3.htm - all major monuments included (and your acropolis ticket is valid for the rest of the sites).
2. Try to go to the Herodion theater one evening to attend whatever is on (concert, opera, ballet, theater) - it is located right under Akropolis , http://www.greekfestival.gr/athens_fest/
3. Catch a bus to cape Sounio (about 55 km from the center of Athens) - the drive by the seaside is interesting , the temple of Poseidon is rather imposing and you can swim / eat at the beach near the cape.
4. for something different, you can try this: http://www.arcult.gr/
