Usually, doctors would palpate (touch) the area , probe the scrotum up with his finger and he will let the patient cough to check if that mass or bulge simultaneously goes with the cough. Illumination using a penlight will also help in inspection of the bulge and categorizes it. Ultrasounds and x-rays are not usually done to confirm a diagnosis.

In many cases a hernia, or when a membrane or wall of the body "leaks" or is pushed out of place by organs or other body parts, doctors can diagnose them merely by sight or touch. Many hernias are superficial, and so can be determined without equipment. Other hernias that are more internal cannot, and so X-rays or endoscopic ("looking within") techniques are applied. An endoscopy is the procedure of putting a tube with an attached camera down he patient's throat and examining the afflicted area. Pricing will vary depending on your health coverage, but as prolonged hernias can lead to serious complications and are, of course, painful, it's worth whatever price it may be.

usually a doctor can diagnose a patient with a hernia with just examining the patient, Sometimes hernia swelling is visible when you stand upright; usually, the hernia can be felt if you place your hand directly over it and then bear down. Other diagnostic tools sued to diagnose a hernia are ultrasounds, or cat scan (comupterized axial tomography)
not sure how much each costs
but see a doc first maybe he can diagnsoe you, and if not will give you a prescription for an ct scan or ultrasound

All hernias are external, except for Hiatal hernias, which are usually at the top of the stomach opening. They feel the hernia, and the area surrounding it. I've had two, and both surgeries together were under 3,000dollars.

I would presume that they would only need to do an ultrasound to confirm it. i don't know how much that would cost. i guess it depends where you live. i've had xrays and ultrasounds and medicare (the government) paid for it.
