If you mean the "concept" of laptop, it was "envisioned" in Xerox PARC in the early 1970's. The Xerox NoteTaker, arguably the first portable computer (but NOT a laptop!) was built in 1976 and only 10 were made.

Those who put down Osborne as answer are clearly copycats who don't even READ the entries. If you actually READ the entries, (or actually LIVED THROUGH the era) you'd realize that the Osborne One is the size of a portable sewing machine (about the size of a modern mid-tower case) which in no way qualify it as a "laptop". Not to mention that Osborne One is AC power ONLY!!!! Same goes for Compaq and IBM Convertible.

The first commercially available "laptop" is GRID Compass, and it does NOT run PC software. As the other said, it's designed by BIll Moddridge in 1980, and released in '82.

The first PC compatible laptop is the Data General One, released in 1984. It has LCD screen and 2 floppy drives.

The laptop was invented by Adam Osborne in 1981. It was called 'Osborne 1' and cost $1,795. It came bundled with $1,500 worth of programmes. It had a tiny computer screen built into it. It was invented by Osborne Computers.

The first portable computer was a success, with sales reaching 10,000 units a month. IBM launched the IBM 5155 Portable Personal Computer in 1984. In 1988, Compaq Computer launched the first laptop PC with VGA graphics, Compaq SLT/286. In 1989, NEC released UltraLite, which was the first 'laptop' computer. Weighting under 5 lbs, it was the precursor of today's models.

The first successful model of the laptop was Compaq Portable which was introduced in 1983 by Compaq. What is believed to be the first laptop in the truest sense of the word is the GRiD Compass 1101 introduced in 1982. It was used by the military and NASA, primarily due to its high cost it was a great commercial success. It was credited to Bill Moggridge.
