Added: Just to clarify, I am aware of the inaccuracy of that statement. (Although some have argued that the primitive notion of a camera stealing the soul is still a factor in that tradition.) Just a joke.

In some societies, yes. The Amish find it very offensive.

Not for the reason given above (soul) but because pictures contradict the practice of humility and go against the commandment of no graven images. Amish girls have dolls, but the dolls have no faces.

I realy wouldn't say so. Many celebrities out there have paparazzi taking their pictures and posting on websites, Magazines, etc... So I wouldn't consider it a crime :D
