Writing this from Beijing, I think there would be lots of opportunities for you, depending upon what your interests are. Everyone from business to government to universities are trying to develop closer ties with China and to understand that country better, and this will involve everything from diplomatic staff to editors and translators (the novel I'm reading right now is translated from Mandarin) to business consultants and executives who can connect with their counterparts in China. It will be up to you to decide how you want to use that degree.

Offer authentic dishes. Avoid combination plates, and offer fast and courteous take out. Look into jobs in the State Department and the diplomatic corps. Corporations need people to translate speech and journals. Wal-Mart is opening a huge market in China. They have a real need for employees who speak the language. I am refering to a job in management, not as a checker. You should be in demand in a number of capacities. There should be plenty of opportunities in the private and public sector. Do you do dry cleaning?

Hello,

I think you'll have lots of opportunities...if you're willing to relocate. With all the American, European, Australian etc. companies wanting to do business in China, you should probably look for jobs in Shanghai, Shenzhen, Beijing etc. Also, if you know other dialects, you should look for a job in Singapore or Hong Kong (good pay and benefits). I should add that you should look for jobs while you are in the U.S. in order to get an expat package.

what's the difference between a phd in philosophy and a big pizza? The pizza can feed your family! HA.

This does not apply to you if you get into translations, government, professor, but if you don't do anything with it like that... the big pizza has more use!

So many opportunities for business to the western world... As you already know, few people can master the language both ways.
