they'll miss the playoffs this year.
the red sox will win the AL east due to thier superior starting rotation, bullpen, and fielding. throw in a great lineup of batters (ramirez, lugo, pedroia, drew are all not hitting as well as they could be) and it's going to be hard for the yankee's to catch up. especially due to the fact that thier starting rotation is in shambles, thier fielding is simply humorous to watch sometimes, and they aren't swinging the bat well (not to mention that even if they were they still dont have the offensive firepower of the world championship teams).
if the indians, white sox and tigers all fall apart then the yankee's might have a chance at the wildcard, but thats highly unlikely.

They are doomed to miss the playoffs this year. Right now they are over 11 games behind the Red Sox and are over five games behind in the wild card. They just do not have the pitching to compete for a place in the playoffs. Wang, Mussina, are pitching poorly. Petite is just all right, and Clemens can't even get minor league players out. Doesn't look good for the perennial favorites.

I am in the miss category. Clemens will not come back and be nearly good enough to make up for the holes in the pitching. The lineup has really crumbled this season- after A Rod and Jeter, guys like Damon, Abreu, Cano, and Giambi have done almost nothing, and with a couple of those guys they will not nearly get enough back for the team to score consistently.

To make the playoffs, the yankees would have to start
playing better right now. They have the hitting, but they have
no speed, are not a fundamentals team, and have an aging
starting pitching staff. Plus the bullpen is very shaky.
It's going to be hard because of the 3 good teams in the
AL central(tigers, indians, white sox), but this being the
yankees, you never know.........................

Personally, whether or not they make the playoffs will depend on their starting pitching. You already know how much injuries have devastated the staff, and you know that they had to rely on rookies in their starting rotation. I understand that right now they are 11 games in back of Boston in the standings. Chances are, unless the teams in the AL Central fall flat on their faces, the Yanks may not even make it as a wild card. Of course, right now that's too early to tell. After all, stranger things have happened in baseball.

I think the pitching will give the Yankees fits. They either pitch well for a game or get shelled. When the Yankee pitchers are on...the Yankee hitters are off...and whats happening with thier star closer? Yikes...

As much as I despise the Yankees I think a late season surge will help them win the wild card. Their offense is good, but their pitching needs a lot of work. Winning the division is almost out of reach already!

first let me say that I AM A YANKEES FAN. a die hard. thats my team. will they make the playoffs? i dont know. im doubtful this year. our starting pitchers are sucking big time. and our bullpen is getting overworked. we're hitting well but not pitching. everyone keeps going on the DL. but its a long saeson and im hoping we get better. most of the other teams havent had many of their players go on the dl yet. as this happens i think we'll make up ground on teams like the sox. as long as we keep hitting. hopefully the addition of clemens will help jump start em a bit.

I think they will make it because they alway's come out of their slumps, and a great talented team like that can't miss the play-offs. A-rod, Jeter, Cano and damon will be strong hitters tommorow and get them back in their groove.
