In my personal beliefs there are no higher powers and yes I agree entirely that religion was created during a time when people had questions but not the technology to anwser them. Religion is good in a sense that it instills good moral in young people but when human nature takes over and it is twisted to what some sicko wants religion is a horrible thing. Wars are faught due to the beliefes of our forefathers passed down to people who view an unaccepting world

My own personal experience suggests that there is a higher power. I would not dismiss God offhand.

You are doing the right thing by using your critical judgment. The last phase of good reasoning skills is to see if a conclusion is vain or redundant. There is no reason for you to declare a conclusion or make a judgment unless it is related to some action. So reserve judgment until you are faced with a situation where it is necessary.

I would argue that religion is more a manifestation of basic human propensities because of what it achieves; explanatory connection of all things (not merely the unexplained), clear courses of action to take in stressful situations, social trust, and an outlet for faith. I would also note that the hypothesis of the question assumes that religion was created to do what it does now, which is a flawed notion since religion is prehistoric and may in fact have been created for different reasons.

"...at a time when...", when was that? Religion is a universal in cultural anthropology; there has been religion as long as there has been men. And when men think they know everything, they will still probably not be able to make a machine that runs by perpetual motion..........like everything in the universe that is not man made does. And, just because you know everything about how Verdi was able to composed great music, doesn't make you a composer. If there is no God, your life is totally meaningless. So you lived 70 years out of 14 billion and counting..........so what; lotta things happened without you. Lastly, you should fear the Lord, because you disbelieve in Him at your peril. Blaze Pascal said that. He was probably smarter than most people on here. He is mentioned in science textbooks, mathematics textbooks, philosophy textbooks, and literature textbooks, even though he died at thirty-seven.
Keep working on it.

its safer to worship religion than science.

science is destroying our environment, our food, farming, out bodies.

Religion is also used to control human behaviour.

Religion is also used to establish class -- the elitists of a faith as compared the "followers". The religious hierarchy receiving benefits that the followers do not share.

In all other medical instances delusions of such nature would be included as mental illness.

I've never taken the 'scared' approach to this philosophy....I think a truer position that speaks of the LIVING QUALITY of the Infinite Creator is if you were to substitute the 'scared' part with: 'leaves us in awe struck wonder'

not so much to belive in higher power
but to deliver comfort,
and in that it has suceeded for billions.

as a race, i feel, we are starting to embrace mystery as much as knowing. when we don't know, and feel good about not knowing, then religion will fail to be necessary,

all is just wonderfully mysterious, and that's just fine
