I don't know, i wonder about that too. the kids at my school seem to be so proud that they live in the ghetto. but then again it is their home, how can you tell someone that they should be ashamed of where they live?

I don't know anyone who is black that is proud to be poor or struggling. It's just that we are a strong people that has been given the gift of endurance from God. Regardless of your environment or situation you must hold your head up to believe there is a brighter day. Getting all sad, depressed, and having a nervous breakdown will get you nowhere. You always hear of rich people who lose it all they can't handle the pressure and cave in...I wonder why? They didn't believe or have the strength to believe for a brigher day.
I live in the suburbs not in the ghetto. Ghetto is a stereotype...your environment should not break you. But give you perseverance. So they're not broken and still have their joy.

The ghetto got nothing wrong and there's nothing wrong to be proud of it, the ghetto would it be worse if there wouldn't people proud of the ghetto. You can be from the poorest country in thew world and you most be proud of your country, so that's what they are doing. And not just black people live in the ghetto, look at you, you said you are Latin and you are from the hood, from the ghetto. so you most be proud of it too. If people don't like few things from where they live they always have the chance to get together to make things change, but waiting for others to do things or waiting for a superhero to rescue you isn't the right way to make things happen. I'm Latin too.

Not all Black people are ghetto or poor...are you that sheltered? Everyone struggles and that is what helps everyone to grow, obviously you haven't lived a full life to realize that. I'm not ghetto or poor and I'm proud to be who I am and everyone should feel happy with the true person that they are on the inside regardless of circumstances. Try showing some compassion and intelligence next time around.

Well, if their proud to be ghetto...then they must be stupid. I think you have misunderstood them. They probably mean that they are proud that they aren't sitting on their butts all day like some rich people....and they are actually TRYING....they aren't proud of being poor....but their proud that they are TRYING to actuallly get out of it probably. and when they say they buy bootleg stuff, some ARE proud of being ghetto. If you go on AIM or myspace...you will see some people on there with usernames like, " Ghetto girl" or something like that...and usually those people arent really ghetto...but they think its cool. so when they ACTUALLY are ghetto....i guess their proud of it even tho they look like fools.
that probably sounds like a stupid answer, but I still think there was some kinda misunderstanding, cuz ive never met ablack person who is proud of being in the ghetto, maybe proud of where they came from, which may be the ghetto...but they may only be proud of coming from the ghetto, because at least they are living and are surviving on what they can do instead of just being on welfare or something.
EDIT: yeah listen to psymaj, she said it...that was what i was trying to say...that they are proud that they are getting through it.

Why is that some white people come on YA and ask all sorts of questions about Black people? Why do some white people make sweeping gross generalizations about Black people? Why do some white people attempt to emulate the culture of Black people, the hip-hop slang, the dance, the style of dressing, some whites spend so much time worrying about Black people and what they do and what they think, and where they live, and their hair, and their homes, cars, language, careers. It is truly amazing!!!

it is a pride of coming thru to the other side, of having hardships that most people will never experience and come out with a good life. have you ever heard a tupac or 50 cent song, they both talk about how bad the ghetto is and how they hated living there...trust me the projects are not a nice place to be growing up.

if you went to war would you be proud you fought and came home alive? that is an EXCELLENT EXAMPLE.
they aren't proud to be poor or struggling.
they are proud that they are alive when they are poor and struggling, because building yourself up is harder when you are poor and struggling.
i am surely not rich,
i am black
but i was also #2 in my school, and that was hard work because i had a lot of drama at home and financial problems
am i proud that i was poor and struggling? no, but i am not ashamed
i am proud of what i became during those times because i am a lot stronger than someone else who lived a normal life or rich.
also if they are proud
black families teach their kids strong pride
especially in their race, we don't want anyone to be ashamed to be black

here's the thing most of you don't understand, apparently you have never lived in the ghetto. we are not PROUD to be POOR and STRUGGLIN'. what we ARE proud of is being able to GET through it. we simply embrace the fact that it's much harder to build yourself up from virtually nothing and make something of yourself and that is something most blacks have to contend with on a quotidian basis. Tell me how could you generationally survive and NOT be proud of that. We are NOT proud of the conditions, we ARE proud of the AMOUNT of stamina it takes to keep our pride, happiness and love afloat. You wouldn't be able to survive one hour let alone years.

You are still stereotyping. Yes, there are SOME that are, maybe because their parents never talked to them about doing better with their lives, just like parents of any color could do or fail to do. There are people of all ethnicity's who aren't doing well and don't inspire their offspring to want any better. This is not just a black issue, like I'm sure you would like to believe.
