Possibly Koreans :-)...To go to what's now called Japan, the people had to cross Korea, so...Furthermore, the grammar is quite similar in both languages..Koreans, Japanese, Turkish and Hungarian people have common ancestors who were nomadic people, in the Oural-Altai mountains (central Asia)

the first people physically in Japan were a grupp called the Ainu. A group of caucasion aboriginals who still live in the northern part of the island of Hokkaido.
The japanese, technically descended from combinations of Korean and Chinese groups did not actually arrive in the islands until sometime late roughly in the early neolithic period. early in the last Ice age (10,000 years ago).
japan has had a sense of Identity for nearly 3000 years, but the actual concept of "JAPAN or NIPPONSU) did not arrive in full until about the time of Ghengis Khan, when attempts at invasion by the Mongols and the Chinese effectively forced an 'us or them identity on the people as a whole.

The Ainu people are indigenous to the northern most islands of the island chain. But, the first Japanese people were there over 10,000 years ago. They both are believed to come from Central Asia.

Interesting trivia is that Ainu remains have been found in Mexico and the United States and date to thousands of years before Columbus.
