The bigger jack is an ethernet port. It is used for high speed internet. If you are connecting the 2 laptops to DSL you can use a router, or if you are using dial- up to connect to the internet, only one computer can connect at a time. What exactly are you trying to connect them for? Either go DSL and buy a wireless router and use the wireless card built in your laptops to connect to the internet or ask someone else... hope this helps

check if your laptops have wireless internet capability, called wifi otherwise.
if so you can create an ad hoc network. one of your laptops act as a router, and the other one connects to it.
this way u can network without any cables

I think you need:

1.) a hub/switch;
2.) use a cross ethernet cable (laptop-laptop);
