I have horrible fatigue. I wake up in the morning and a couple hours later, I feel as if I haven't slept for days. I can barely stay awake throughout work. It's like that every day. I go to bed earlier but still get very very tired. What did you do for more energy and ways to stay awake throughout the day???

I am in the first trimester, (only seven weeks) I try to eat every few hours, I always carry granola bars and yogu, but most of the time I just dont want to eat. (morning sickness is just the best isn't it?) But I'll keep trying. Thank you for all the answers, I greatly appreciate it! Take care

What trimester are you in? Extreme fatigue is pretty normal during the first trimester and there's not a lot to do about it except sleep. In later trimesters it could signal an iron deficiency. That's what happened to me during my third trimester, the doc did a blood count and iron was low. After I went on an iron supplement my fatigue was decreased dramatically and I had a lot more energy.

What trimester are you in? There's a couple things you can do ...
1. Make sure you're getting enough protein - 80 grams a day. Not enough protein = not enough energy.

2. Make sure you're getting enough water - at least 10 pints a day. Not drinking enough water will cause dehydration, which can cause fatigue.

3. Make sure you're EATING enough - instead of eating 2-3 meals a day, try and eat 'mini meals' and snacks every 2-3 hours. Not full meals, maybe some fruit, cheese and crackers, yogurt, peanut butter and crackers, nuts, etc.

4. Stay away from processed carbs and junk food (chips, etc.). Low nutritional value, and they'll zap the energy right out of you. Stay away from caffeinated and sugary drinks too (juices, colas, etc.) Avoid diet drinks, too - the chemicals can wreck havoc with your energy level.

5. Make sure you're getting enough sleep - at least 8-9 hours at night, and if at all possible, try to grab a nap in the afternoon. Building a baby is hard work for your body, and your body will use up a lot of energy.

6. Did I mention you need to drink water? Not drinking enough water is a leading cause of fatigue - whether you're pregnant or not. You really can't under-estimate the importance of water in your pregnancy diet for a number of reasons!

Don't be afraid to take a nap during lunch and after work. Also, might want to have your iron checked (that can make you more tired than normal) and remember that when you are building a placenta you are burning more calories per hour than a mountain climber. Of course you're tired!

First trimester is the hardest for fatigue.

I don't know your situation, but if you can... carry a timer and at lunch nap in your car and set the timer as an alarm clock.

It gets easier in the second trimester.

Suffered and still suffering. Nothing has helped me. I think I slept through most of my first trimester and now in my third I only wish I could sleep.

Good luck to you.

You probably need more protein and more iron.

Make sure you are eating something every couple of hours through the day.

Carry protein snacks like peanut butter and crackers with you.

I relate with you. I was not working at the time. I woke up about the time hubby was coming home from work. Just worry about yourself at this time. Your body is going thru very many chances.

Boost your iron supplies and drink plenty of water.
Take power naps if you need to :)
