Ive been playing for five years and have never took any lessons or read any books. Because of this there is alot of stuff that I do not know, for example it took me five years to learn basic chords and notes. Recently I have gotten "stuck" I seem to just play the same stuff over and over again, not really learning anything new. Has this happened to you, and what did you do to get over it?

What I did , when I would get like this, is acually go out, and watch other guitar players in other bands, and sit there and watch and learn a lot of good ideas, and licks! I would go to bars, clubs, VFWs, concerts, coffeehouses (especially around universities), at b-b-q's, weddings, and anywhere there was a band playing, and I learned a lot!
Also watch the guitar players on TV, Dvd concerts, and video clips on "youtube"! ON youtube they have instructional videos of every style of music, and guitar pickers you can think of! There is a lot of good information on there!

Every guitar player hits a slump now and again. Maybe try to learn how to read tabs or better yet, get together and jam with some friends. You can exchange songs and it will renew your interest. Learning new songs will always help you over the hump. Good Luck and keep rocking!

If you don`t do already you could try learning songs by ear and this will develop your listening.Get a book on various modes and exercises and practise them, then improvise to some music.

Yes, this has happened and I found that just relaxing and not pushing yourself too hard helps. Have you tried writing and playing your own music? That seemed to open a whole new world to me and it just kept going. Good luck to you.

Expand your horizons, listen to new music, download songs from groups you don't know too much about, then the ideas will come flooding back, trust me.
