One thing which affects it are laws limiting the size of families. China has successfully checked its population growth by mandating that couples can have no more than 1 child. So, a woman who gets pregnant more than once faces a mandatory abortion. Other things which might limit a population's growth are inadequate natural and medical resources, poor sanitation habits and personal hygiene, and contaminated water supplies. Anything which gives the grim reaper a leg up will act to depress a population's exponential growth. Also, sexual abstinence and the use of contraceptives will have an effect.

Yes, this is getting to be a big problem! There must be an
intensive effort to help people understand that birth control
is absolutely necessary. Some religions do not allow birth
control, but they don't have to take care of 7-8 kids.
I think the answer boils down to the women. Most women will
have to work outside the home in the future, and it's a lot
easier to raise two than a bunch. If 2 parents have 2 children
then at least the population growth would be stabilized....
at least in theory.

main things are lack of space, food and resources.
Other things are related to density of populations like disease (ie more densely populated areas will be affected more with a diease as it can travel faster thru the population than a smaller more spread out population).

In bacteria things like waste products that build up will often kill themselves!!!! I guess with humans we have a bit of that going on too!!
