People who lived in the 60's and 70's can tell you crime was much more of a problem in their time than it is now. All crime figures show crime has gone especially murder and rape the two crimes people fear the most. Yet people always say you never know with crime now a days.

Because people watch television and be live that is the reality.

Events are covered by the news media because they are unusual not because they are the norm.

Same with popular entertainment, people think that is reality. It would not be a very interesting show if CSI reflected the actual murder rate in Vegas; one of the lowest in the country.

crime is not at a all time low. more and more companies are going out of business and that leaves hundreds with work. people become desperate and do desperate things.when it comes to your families well being most will do whatever it takes.this kind of pressure will cause unreasonable thinking and decision making. last week i drove down the street next to the unemployment offices. i was shocked. that entire area of the shopping center was covered with people seeking work

Because the media--newspapers, magazines, TV and news on the internet--concentrate mostly on the bad. "If it bleeds, it leads" is the main thought of a lot of them. And people, when they gather, love to exchange "ain't it awful" stories and recount what they heard. Pretty soon, paranoia becomes the norm.
