C.C. Sabathia is a great pitcher on a great team that will win a lot of games. It was brave of you to part with him.
When I think of Ryan Howard's struggles this year two things come to mind.
1. Scouting. The majority of Howard's power comes to left field, unusual for a left handed hitter. For example, bonds and giambi hit nearly all their home runs to right field. Ptichers now know after last season they cannot pitch away to him and have been increasingly throwing hard stuff into his hands which makes it difficult to take the ball to left field.
2. Lineup Protection. Utley and Howard are absolute mashers and scare the crap out of anyone facing them. However, pitchers are more likely to pitch around Howard, batting cleanup, and take their chances with Pat Burrell. As long as Pat Burrell continues to bat .225, Ryan Howard will find a hard time seeing quality strikes.
If the Phillies start to bat Aaron Rowand 5th, things could turn around pretty quickly.
I think Howard will improve anyway, though not to the extent of last season. Expect a dropoff from last year all around, with an increase in walks.

if your pitching is good without sabathia and you need some power than ya you made a good trade. In trades like these you always need to look at what you need and what you have a lot of

You got a good hitter for a good pitcher and you say you need offensive help, so it was a good trade for you.

depends on if you have other pitchers and how much ryan howard improves your line up vs. who is in there now.
