The car or SUV matters less than your choice of tires. This is a situation where you get what you pay for. Top line winter tires, preferably mounted on separate rims, should do the job. Steel wheels are best for the snowy months, since there is less chance of corrosion and pothole damage.
Many manufacturers suggest a narrower winter tire than that used for the other three seasons. Definitely not wider, this just leads to flotation, not traction. Also, correct tire pressures are as important in winter as in summer.

A reliable front wheel drive car I think will be your best option. The make and model are not as important as long as it is a car. Some may think a 4 wheel drive SUV or pickup might be best. the truck will accelerate very well but with their extra mass take much longer to stop especially on snow and ice.

A standard car can drive in snow, having 4wd or all wheel drive is helpful, but only if you know how to use it. No car is better on ice than others, it's all about the driver at that point. Subarus are all wheel drive, and work well in snow. If you know how to engage 4wd, Toyota 4runners are nice and have excellent resale value.

a frt wheel drive car will do better than most as long as your not "pushing" the snow. ( if it's really deep snow you need more ground clearance like a SUV,4x4)

please consider the Chevy TAHOE with 4-wheel drive or maybe a used Land Rover Discovery ...... with mud/snow tires maybe some tire chains you can go about anywhere in bad weather --- teach yourself to drive on ice and you will become a better driver and a safer driver .......... good luck
