It is very surprising that the ink cartridges are so expensive that they account for about 85% the cost of a new printer here in India.

I basically need black ink cartridge. Could you please guide me which printer is most economical in terms of black ink. A cartridge gives about 200 prints. Is there a printer which has very large cartridges or rather drums of inks, which could be economical for black printing? If so, please name the make and model. Thanks in advance.

Your question points out one of the biggest problems in the printing industry. However, you can get around the high prices. Try purchasing remanufactured cartridges. You can also try buying compatible cartridges. Epson is a good brand to go with and so is HP. Ink is expensive, but you can adjust your purchasing decisions to save money.

Go for epson LX300 dot matrix printer....just kidding.
I'll go for HP deskjets and refill the cartridges myself. It's very easy to refill - just direct injection of ink into the cartridges (as compared to epson cartridges where u need to reset the chips). you can check this link http://refillinstructions.com/ for more info on refill instruction and compare different brands.

I vote for older HP Deskjets. The Deskjet 500 / 500c use large cartridges that contains up to 40 mL of ink, compared as little as 8mL of ink in some carts nowadays. AND if you treat them well they are refillable and can be reused several times.

get a monochrome ( non color ) laser printer
Interestingly enough if you buy an inkjet printer the overall cost of owning a printer can be in total half by purchasing an expensive printer rather than the entry level one.
This is the total cost of running a printer - including cost of printer , consumables and paper
