As a Carolinian displaced to the north, I used to recoil at being called a redneck until I got into reading the late great Lewis Grizzard and learned the actual origin of the term. Redneck was a term coined in the days of slavery. It was used to identify those believed to or known to be non slave owners. Their neck was red from the sun because they worked their own fields rather than sitting on the porch at the big house. Rednecks were generally decent, upstanding, hard working people. So once I learned that the sting of the word was gone and on the inside I still get a good laugh at those who use the term with absolutely no clue whatsoever as to what it really means. These days it may have eveolved into meaning something different to most people, but none the less I've become okay with it.

I believe is handiest due to the fact that they're jealous folks. We are well mannered, and you do not pay attention approximately Northern Food. I love being Southern. I was once born in Mississippi, raised in Northwest Florida, and now Live in Tennessee. I have no longer skilled the Racism that everybody assumes is right here. I am 30, so sure I don't doubt what my household will have obvious throughout the Civil Rights activities, however I have had uncommon peers of each and every tradition dwelling right here within the Good Ol' South, and might by no means transfer my household to another side of the nation. We have morals down right here. I might aspect with plenty extra of those well ol' boys, than any of the ones Rappers and whatnot's in different components of the nation. American by means of Birth, Southern by means of the Grace of God!!! I might by no means select to be any unique.

That's a great question. I am originally from NY but moved to the South a few years ago, and I definitely had a stereotype in my mind. I also thought Southerners would have great manners, I was tired of rude Northerners. Well, I found out quickly that there are quite a few Southerners that are intelligent and well educated and well traveled people. Some of the best schools are in the south. I also found out that they really don't have better manners they just hide their emotions better. With New Yorkers, you know where you stand.
Back to your question. Yes, it's just as degrading as making fun of Hispanics or African Americans. Because you are white (I'm assuming), people think it's ok to make fun of you and that's wrong. The people that make fun of Southerners are close minded, ignorant and dare I say it, prejudice people. They have to be to say such rude things to another human being. How would they like it if we said all CA's were liberal, vegetarian, sex addicts?????

People make fun of anyone and everyone. Don't take it personally or seriously or get offended. If anything, take it as a compliment and thank them for making you the center of their world. As for the "redneck" thing, that's an even greater compliment. I'm from the south too, and "rednecks" are some of the most wonderful, fun, and awesome people around. There's nothing degrading about it. Don't let anyone lie to you. Be who you are and be happy.
Many blessings :)

Exactly. I'm a Cherokee from East TN, and people are the same way---they aren't even smart enough to realize that a Cherokee can't technically even be a "redneck" because we don't burn in the sun. I have no accent because I'm a broadcaster---a radio news anchor.
The reason people get away with it is that not enough Southeastern people tell others it's offensive. So, tell them it's offensive, and I tell them just what you said. Speak up every time it happens. Tell them "Would you say that to Hispanics or African Americans? If not, why'd you just say it to me?"
Hey, Kwitch, my people have been in the Southeast for over 10,000 years. I don't think you newbies have any right to tell anyone what justifies insults.

exactly, redneck/hillbilly etc are all rascist terms used to demean white people of southern origin. Stand up to people who use redneck as a term. Redneck is just as bad as cracker or whitey. Report them.
in terms of society, it is like everything else. We have been in the victim state for so long, that it has become acceptable to demean white people/christians/men. Somehow, this is ok. Next time someone uses the term redneck, explain to them how rascist this is. . . . then knock their teeth out.

Don't Southerners make fun of Northeners all the time? It's one of those cultural divides left over from the Civil War, or The War Between the States, as it is known down south. Its just a result of cultural misunderstanidng, as a result of ignorance or lack of knowledge. In reality, everyone, north or south, is an american.

Because you are white. You are the cause of all the misery and oppression in the world. It's because of you that there is poverty...and war. You did it all! YOU! YOU! You deserve to be belittled and degraded. Bad! Bad white person! Bad! (And if you are fat...you are doubly bad! I'll hit you across the nose with a rolled up newspaper.)
Sorry, trying to be humorous and lighten things up. :D

At least you or others can openly voice out your opinions. I come from a country where you can be imprisoned and fined heavily just by voicing out racist comments. Even when you write it in your blog. Think about that one.

Become a stand-up comic, like you said if it is a joke...
Might be nice if people did not try so hard to find ways to make fun of people wouldn't it?
