My car makes a slight knocking sound over bumps and rough surfaces. Mechanics have checked the suspension and bushes and no one is entirely sure of the cause. I would like to find a vibrating road simulator so I could see under the car whilst it is being driven over simulated bumps. I live in the north west of England.

I have driven on bumpy roads with mechanics and we still can't find thew noise upon jacking the car. Short of straping someone to the underside, or a camera underneath, I don't have any other ideas.

Don't think there is a lot of call for a bumpy road simulator...I live in the North West and have no idea where such a thing may be....The road research laboratory may have one, but would cost a LOT of money to hire that one.....best bet seems to be what original poster said, find a bumpy road. I know plenty with sleeping Policeman road bumps, and take a mechanic with you......but sods law says it won't make a sound when you want it to....

Is the knocking noise coming from the motor, or the underside of the car? If it is the underside, you probably have a few rocks that have gotten stuck in between a heat shield, or your exhaust/muffler may be rattling underneath. Jack the car up, and take a look, wiggle the exhaust and check areas where rocks could get stuck. My car recently had this issue, and we solved it by jacking the car and looking.

Have you had any problems/replaced parts on your car? I had a similar problem. It turned out to be the exhaust pipe I had fitted had a weld ridge right on the back cross member of the chassis. Drove me mad and I had it on the garage 7 time before we noticed it. By then the entire exhaust pipe was lagged in exhaust rubber.

Pack a nice picnic lunch in a basket, drive by, pick up your mechanic and tell him you're not taking him back to the shop until you hear the noise.

what the problem was for my car is, the mechanic that did my brakes placed in brake pads that were 2 mm smaller than itss supposed to be, so it clanked over bumps, u should check ur engine mounts and maybe loose tools in the engine bay

All you have to do is invent this bumpy road simulator and youre set. Shouldn't be too hard to do.

Maybe you could have them test drive it over a rough road, that might help them with diagnosing it.
