Because if you use lower octane gas in an engine designed with higher compression, it will cause knocking ( pre-detonation ), which can and WILL harm your engine over time. Premium gas won't ignite as easily under higher compression by itself, while low-test will self-ignite due to the heat of compression by itself inside the cylinder. That's why you hear a knocking sound, as the gas is igniting before the piston reaches the top, so it makes a noise, which means it's trying to force the piston DOWN while it's still coming UP. NOT good! Use what is recommended for the car and engine it has by the manufacturer.

I'm sure some of the manufacturers will tell you to use premium grade, maybe because they get a kick back from the oil companies. I've used the lowest grade unleaded gasoline in my 96 Pontiac, 99 Chevy and my 2006 Buick, and have never had any problems.

The octane level will be lower and you will be getting the pressure of combustion too early. Your power and gas mileage will suffer and you can do damage to the top of the piston. The pinging sound you hear is a detonation. You need a higher octane to get a smooth combustion because of the timing of the valves, piston, injectors (if you have them) and ignition.

those cars that require prem. gas have a high compression engine ---- using the low grade gas will cause the motor to knock and miss fire and it will cause valve clatter --- if you own a car that needs premium gas and you think that you are saving the $$'s ____ please re-think the "cheap gas" thing and either buy the premium or dump the car for a Hybrid like a Toyota Prius......

They won't run as well. And they might "knock" or "ping" because the octane rating isn't high enough.
